Back to the board

Divide the class into two teams. A student from each team should stand with their back to the board. You should write a word or draw a picture on the board. The team of each student should try to explain that word to their team member using all the possible clues. The first student to guess the word, wins a point for his/her team.

Board game on the floor

Place flashcards related to a certain topic on the floor as if to make a board game. Have students throw a dice. The students will be the “pieces“. Have them move on as many flashcards as the dice tells them to. When the students arrive at the flashcard, they should make a sentence using the word related to the flashcard.

Follow the leader

Students line up behind the teacher. Model the activity first and then let a student be the leader. You should do an action and shout out the word for that action. Students should copy the action and repeat the word.

Odd-One-Out

Place 4 flashcards in a row on the board. Students must circle the odd one out. Ex: cat – dog – sun – mouse

Question Ball

Elicit from the students a list of questions. Write them on the board. Have students sit in a circle. Throw a soft ball to a student and ask any question that is on the board. This student must answer the question and throw the ball to another student asking a different question and so on. When all the questions on the board have finished, the game should go on for another 5 questions. Students should make them up as the game goes along. Students are not allowed to repeat any of the questions.

Spin the Bottle

Have students sit in a circle with a bottle in the middle. The teacher should spin the bottle. When it stops spinning, the student it is pointing to has to answer a question. If the answer is correct then that student can spin the bottle. When it stops this student asks a question to the person the bottle is point to.

Spelling (telephone game)

Divide the class into small groups of 2 to 4 students. Give each group a pile of letters. Call out the word and ask them to spell out the word by taking the necessary letters.

Bingo

Each student has a card with several numbers or vocabulary words. The teacher calls out the numbers/words randomly and, when a number is called out, pupils circle it. When a student has circled all the number/words he or she says "Bingo!" and has finished.

Tic tac toe

Make a grid on the board with nine spaces. One team is “noughts” and the other is “crosses”. The main goal is to complete the grid horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Fill the nine spaces with vocabulary, sentences or questions.

Relay race

Divide the class into 2 teams. Divide the board into 2 columns. Have 2 sets of flashcards. Put one set in one column and the other set in the other column in a different position. Have the 2 teams line up in front of the board. When the teacher calls out a flashcard, they must run to the board, take off the flashcard and make a sentence using it.

Memory games using words/sentences/ questions and answers

Divide students into groups depending on the size of your class. Give each student two square pieces of paper. Ask them to write questions and answers, synonyms, antonyms, sums and results (9+10= / 19), pair ups (father/ mother, brother/ sister), etc. Collect the paper slips, mix them and put them on the floor upside down. Students sit on the floor in a circle and, one at a time, turn 2 pieces of paper. If they match, they keep them; if they don't, they put them back. The student with most pairs wins the game.

Running dictation

Divide the class into two teams. The members of the teams take it in turns being the runner and the writer. Students must run to a specific text, read it and run back to dictate it to the writer.

Chain story

Divide the class in 2 groups. Hand out a blank piece of paper to each group. You may give each group a theme. The first member of each group must write a sentence, fold it and hand it to the next member. Do this until all the members have written a sentence. Then, open up the paper and read the story.

Mimicry Dice games

You can use any topic you are working on: if you are working with animals, assign an animal to each number. Have the students roll the dice and act out the animal. You may use action verbs, professions, places etc. Instead of acting out, you may also ask them to make a sentence using the word.

Questions and answer game

Divide the board into two columns. Write answers to 10 questions on both sides of the board but in a different sequence. Divide the class into two teams and have them line up in front of the board. Call out the first question. The first student from each line must run to the board and read out the correct answer.

Balloons

There are many games you can play using balloons. If you would like to consolidate a certain structure, have students stand up and divide them into small groups. Give a balloon to each group. Toss the balloon in the air and have them practice the structure. Ex: Tony, Would you like to go to the movies? (Toss the balloon)Tony: No, sorry, I can´t. (Toss the balloon) Alice, would you like to go to have a snack? (Toss the balloon), and so on.

Pass the parcel

Place all the flashcards you would like to revise inside a box. Choose a song students enjoy. Have students sit in a circle and play the song. While the song is playing, have students pass the box. Stop the song. The student holding the box must open it and remove the first flashcard. Have him/her make up a sentence using the flashcard.

Grouping

Play a song and have students walk or hop around the class. When you stop the song, call out a number from 1 to 9. Students have to quickly get in a group or groups of that number. The students who are not able to group themselves must sit down. Repeat the procedure until all students are placed in a group.

Talking relay

Have students sit in 4 lines on the floor or at their desks. The last students of each line should ask the student in front any question they like. This student must answer and then do the same with the student in front and so on. When the first of the line answers, he/she must run to the back of the line and follow the same procedure. The line that gets all their team sitting in their original places first, wins.

Side to side

Divide the board into two columns. Place flashcards randomly in both columns. Call out a flashcard. According to where the flashcard is (right side or left side of the board), students must jump to the same side.
